How to Act Like a Mermaid

Mermaids are mystical creatures that live in the water. If you believe in mermaids and want to act like one, read on!

[edit] Steps

  1. Grow out your hair so it is long. If you have really short hair, try and growing it out to at least shoulder length. Wear sea accessories in your hair, such as starfish shapes, shell barrettes, strands of green ribbon that appear like seaweed etc.
  2. Use make-up to enhance the watery look. If you really want to get into this, buy waterproof paint and you can paint your face to look mystical. Or, make good use of blues and greens, including sparkling makeup as depicted in this photo.
  3. Use mood-changing items. Mermaids' tail, hair color, and nails change color with their mood; just as the seawater's surrounding them change color rapidly with the changing light. To replicate this, you could try Mood nail polish. Mood rings, bracelets and anklets might also be suitable additions.
  4. Wear shell jewelry. Items made from shells and pearls remind humans of the sea and are definitely the items of choice for mermaids.
  5. Choose a name. Think of something that conjures up the ocean, seashore or the depths. Use a geography book to assist you, or read old myths about sea maidens.
  6. Select your mermaid's character and background. Naturally, mermaids have personalities and feelings. Choose what you would like to do and where you would like to live. Good suggestions include deep waters, cold waters, etc. Reflect your choice of living space in your clothing colors, including green, blue, turquoise, browns and flashes of gold etc.
  7. Get a tail-fin. Don't worry; you don't have to pretend. You can get waterproof tail-fins at your local trick store or costume store. See the photo here for a good example; it is simple enough to make one at home if you can sew.
  8. Hang around water and get known as a water babe. If you live in an apartment, you can go to the pool almost everyday. If you live near the beach, you can go in a small cave with water in it and play. If you live in a regular townhouse, go to your local pool and do it with a friend. If you have your own pool, you're good to go!
  9. Make your room into a mermaid's paradise. Select items that reflect the sea, in colors of blue, aquamarine, turquoise, corals etc. Add in a treasure chest (fill with glass pebbles), cellophane seaweed and tiaras to complete the look. A few mermaid statues would also enhance the feeling of belonging with the mermaids.

[edit] Tips

  • They have bra-like things that are shells or sea stars. You can wear something like that.
  • If you are scared to do this when people are around, you can use a friends backyard, if they let you or you can go to the pool when nobody is around.
  • Some mood rings are cheaply made. Don't wear them for too long, or you will risk having a green finger.
  • Watch a bunch of mermaid movies
  • When you swim, put your legs and feet together because remember that you don't have seperate legs!!!!

[edit] Warnings

  • Don't force yourself to stay underwater too long. Mermaids come up for air all the time. Before you do this, you can practice holding your breath.
  • For younger kids remember that you are not a mermaid. Come up for air, otherwise you will drown.
  • Always have your parents watch you while being a mermaid when swimming!
  • You might want to be a strong swimmer, otherwise you might drown because you can't swim well.
