How to Act Scene if You Are of a Different Race
Being scene isn't all about being a certain color; get your style across no matter what.
[edit] Steps
- Know the music. A cornerstone of the scene society is the music. If you do not know the music, then your chances of being accepted as scene are slim to none. No matter what taste of music you have, you will probably be able to find a scene band that you enjoy listening to. Any FBR (Fueled bBy Ramen) label bands are a good start. Those include Panic! At the Disco, The Hush Sound, Paramore, Phantom Planet, The Cab, Powerspace, Fall Out Boy and Cobra Starship. Warped Tour is the summer music tour that is the most scene tour in the United States. If you would like a good list of bands to get to know, check out those that toured in the past couple years. Also, know some background to the bands like what city they are from, when/how they got started, and the names of the band members.
- Go to shows. Scene kids go to shows of these bands and despite popular belief, not all of them go with large groups of fellow scene kids. Meeting other people at shows is one of the easiest places to make new friends. Ask which group they're there for, whether they have tickets to a different show, etc. Strike up a conversation about the music. If you do not feel confident about your music knowledge, feel free to change to subject to something else after the initial ice is broken.
- Dress the part. This means skinny or straight leg dark jeans, band shirts, black hoodies, converse or vans, fingerless gloves, studded belts, etc. However keep in mind that being scene is the way you act and the music you listen to, not necessarily the way you look. Being scene is about looking the way you want without caring what other people think. If you like your super curly hair, do not feel pressured to straighten it every day or dye it a different color unless you really want to. If you have curves, do not starve yourself to look good in those skinny jeans. Look the way you want, not the way you think other people want you to look. If you act scene, then 90% of your job is done.
- Know who you are. Be confident in yourself and your style, no matter what race you are. If you do not know who you are, other people will not either. It does not matter how you look if you are really scene. Race has little to no effect when it comes to whether people consider you scene or not if you know your music and culture, you dress scene and you act the way you want.
[edit] Tips
- Black hoodies and converse/vans are the bare essentials of the scene style. If nothing else, try to secure those and make a habit of wearing them.
- Having friends that are scene is helpful, but not required. They introduce you to new bands, other scene kids, and can be a fount of scene information.
- Scene kids will not quiz you on your knowledge of bands or famous scene myspacers, but you will be expected to know what they are talking about, should it come up in conversation.
- Hot Topic is a great place for scene styles
- If quick results are desired, get scene hair. Straight, brightly colored or striped, with long side-swept bangs. If being a real scene kid is desired, then scene hair is not necessary.
- Buy shirts at the concerts you go to. They are good conversation starters with other scene kids.
[edit] Warnings
- Do not act scene just to be a part of the fad.
- Do not refer to yourself as scene or emo. If someone else calls you that, deny it (but not too vehemently).
- Do not act rude or mean; this does not exude confidence, only insecurity.
