How to Attract Subject Area Experts to Become Involved in wikiHow
We can always benefit from having more knowledgable people take a special interest in various sections of wikiHow every now and then. If you would like to try and draw such an expert to the site (we've called them "Garden Tenders"), here are some suggestions for how you might be able to help encourage these experts.
[edit] Steps
- Find an area in need of a little watching - for example, an area of interest might be in disaster preparedness, infant care or chess.
- Check out the existing Garden Tender articles listed in the wikilinks below to get an idea of how to write an article to attract a Garden Tender.
- Write the Garden Tender call for experts. Borrowing from these articles as you see fit, write an article to help attract a writer who might know the target area well. Explain that their expertise would be helpful to wikiHow readers. Let them know how much we would welcome their participation to whatever extent they can manage.
- Provide wikiHow editing links inside of your article, so that the expert you have encouraged will know how to jump right in and get started.
- Find some of the most popular pages already existing in the target subject area.
- Go to these pages and link your new Garden Tender article back to these pages.
- Become a Garden Tender. Of course, if you want to become the Garden Tender yourself, please do so! Feel free to take on this role and tend your area with care, adding articles, wikiHow links, editing and keeping an eye on it from time to time.
[edit] Tips
- The idea is to place YOUR new garden tender article exactly where the person you are trying to attract will be likely to see it. If you are hoping a stamp collector will start editing, then you will want to leave your garden tender article linked to some of the most widely viewed stamp collecting articles.
- Perhaps you actually know a person who would be just perfect for looking after articles about pedicures or locksmithing, or navigation. If so, be sure and send the link!
- Even if you don't feel like writing a Garden Tender article to encourage other writers, direct contact with a person you know would be perfect for looking after the articles might just do the trick. Maybe just phone them or send them an e-mail and ask them.
- Your contribution in seeking authors will be appreciated by readers from everywhere. And in inspiring authors to write, you may just be giving budding writers a new outlet to express their creativity.
- See How to Contribute to wikiHow for more ideas on contributing to wikiHow.
