How to Be Okay with Having a Communist Friend
Worried that you are beginning to hate one of your friends or family members because they have told you that they are a Communist?
[edit] Steps
- Know that you don't have to agree with them. Many people are pro-capitalism, and that's fine.
- Show respect to any Communists you know. Don't constantly criticize their beliefs. They have the same rights of opinion as you do.
- Learn about the history of persecution of communists in the Red Scares[1] and McCarthyism.
- Remember that a Communist most likely does not support dictators (such as Kim Jong Il or Josef Stalin). Most Communists believe in democratic socialism- which is the use of Communism in a democratic society.
- Consider researching the core beliefs of Communism and regardless show respect for their beliefs. But remember that you don't have to sacrifice your principles for them.
- Focus on the better things in your friendship. Don't just argue about communism vs. capitalism all the time. Life is too short for that.
- Support your friend if other people pick on them. Communists have to hear quite a bit of insults about their beliefs, and that is not very fair.
[edit] Tips
- If you must have arguments, make them structured. Shouting matches never have winners.
- Be kind and supportive to your friend.
[edit] Warnings
- Don't hate your friend because of their beliefs.
- Don't start another Cold War, you likely don't have enough money to purchase nuclear weapons.
