How to Be Sophisticated (for Teens)

There are many ways to act sophisticated. Sophisticated people are similiar to classy people, although money means less in sophistication. You will find that people will think of you as intelligent and mature. If it doesn't come to you naturally, these tips may help.

[edit] Steps

  1. Make sure you are always well groomed and looking your best before you appear in public. This means that you need to shower daily. Wear deodorant. Ladies, if you want to wear makeup, learn how and do so. Otherwise, just wash your face daily. When picking out your clothing for the day, know what looks good on you. It helps to be stylish, but stylish does not mean anything if the article of clothing does not look attractive on you. Ladies, avoid men's clothes because they will make you look sloppy. Men, avoid women's clothes and shirts that are too tight. Even if you want to show off your muscles, it's not sophisticated.
  2. Stand up straight, never slouch. Sophistication requires you to never be tired-looking.
  3. Mingle with adults and children. Some adults will put on airs, others will become your best friends. Keep that in mind. With children, act interested in what is going on in their lives....such as, what sports do they play, how is school going, etc.
  4. Control yourself in public. Refrain from running around, screaming, waving your arms wildly if you see someone you know. A cool wave and a smile will do the trick.
  5. Wear appropriate attire for the occasion. Nothing too juvenile or revealing is appropriate. For example, if the occasion is formal, dress in formal attire.
  6. Eat responsibly. When at a party or sophisticated restaurant, eat your food (such as pizza) with utensils rather than with your hands.
  7. Have good manners. People want to be around someone who is polite. You don't have to be politically correct, just polite. People want to know how you feel about things. Don't spend an hour long meal on small talk, but don't skip small talk.
  8. Be confident but not arrogant. Arrogance, condescension and false superiority are turn-offs to people who might otherwise want to be your friend.
  9. About the hair....women, styling your hair is a must, unless your hair is naturally perfect, which I highly doubt. Ladies: If your hair needs more body, buy volumizing products and become friends with your hairspray bottle. If you have wavy hair and want straight or curly, scrunch it or straighten, although many wavy hair types are pretty by themselves. Curly hair needs to be frizzles, so buy smoothing products that enhance your curls but fight the frizz. Men: Keep your hair neat. If your hair is prone to cowlicks, it may be best to keep it short if you are trying to look sophisticated. If you are African American, avoid dying your hair blond....it looks fake. Both men and women: Avoid dying your hair any unnatural color or too bright of a natural color. Comb your hair always. Men, do not let your hair grow longer than shoulder length. Women, keep your hair no longer than the middle of the back, as longer hair than that is tacky.

[edit] Tips

  • Avoid heavy jewelry, or gold and silver together.
  • Read books on many subjects so you'll have a wide range of knowledge. Try reading classics.
  • Get a good spell check program and use it. No one's spelling is perfect.
  • Don't overdo your make-up. Keep it subtle and appropriate for your age group.
  • Blacks and grays are simple but sophisticated colors. Tailored clothes give a nice sharp line. But remember...it must fit you well.
  • Wear a nice, pleasant perfume or cologne. But make sure you don't over do it!
