As a Christian do you want to get involved in local politics to serve your town, district, county, parish, borough or ward. Do you favor one candidate or party as a Christian? Well, Abraham Lincoln said you must make sure that you are on God’s side. Are you? Do you believe that you and your influences are on the right side?
...not on the side of what you can get from intimidating, confusing or controlling other voters. Political beliefs (or a faith like Christianity) grow to millions mostly one-by-one. So, here's how a Christian can get involved in local politics hopefully for the right reasons: if you really want to serve others...
[edit] Steps
- Do not expect local politicians to move your social/moral reform in the right direction even with your support--unless enough people support, influence and help the right people into positions like council-persons, commissioners, district courts, legislators, elected judges--not just the executives (the mayor, county manager, district attorney or county judge's office, governor or even president)!
- Pray about getting into the elections process. Be guided by the Bible and by God's biblical will, and be in the right mood and be sure that you know that you have the enthusiasm and persistence to be dedicated and motivated to follow through and finish!
- Hypocrite Alert/Caution: many people say that you should follow your conscience. Beware because you or others may have in the course of lusty and unfruitful living already hardened and seared (destroyed) your conscience by habitually going against you better judgment! Seek to feel at peace (feel it is right and still be enthused with the ideals) about your choices and decisions.
- Model and expect outstanding individual morality like protecting life of the least of God's children (born/unborn) and using good values in every way (Like: find out how to choose judges who will not legislate from the bench!). That is a part of each person's responsibility in the election process.
- See what guiding principles and issues are active, list the needs, set goals for yourself, study the local issues before deciding which ones to support and what kind of changes are really the right changes in your locale.
- Stay informed about the issues, don't just act like a blind and crazy adherent (stuck in place) or advocate for a party without knowing what you are talking about in crucial matters.
- You should be able to get a copy or outline of each parties past platform (objectives). Hopefully the parties are not just putting out propaganda, without really intending to do the things they explain as their goals.
Your options
- Get a name among the party by being not just a voter--be a volunteer: Register to vote in the USA <-- and learn --> how to vote <--. Be active, work as a volunteer with a party or for a candidate.
- Be a Poll Watcher (USA) which is an official party election voting/counting observer. Sometime well before elections contact the party or candidate that you support and volunteer to be a poll-watcher, if this is legal in your local voting (they want trustworthy party related persons and there is an oath of office). They ask among themselves (party activists) for volunteers and will not accept just any one.
- You would receive instructions about the duties like watching for wrong deeds. You would not interfere but only observe and report to designated authorities.
- Law school students, Young Republicans and Young Democrats on college campuses (USA) are actively recruited for this position, as they are considered to be serious about the law or party goals and objectives.
- You should receive some identification, a badge or "id-tag/sticker" for that party and the information about who you would call or contact, if you believe there are irregularities or lawbreaking in the polling place.
- In Canada this position (quite similar to US Poll Watcher) is called a Elections Scrutineer; this is a party position and is --> described and explained here <--.
- You would receive instructions about the duties like watching for wrong deeds. You would not interfere but only observe and report to designated authorities.
- Participate in party meetings this is for the selection of party issues and workers for the next year for example. This is often set up to be at the end of the primary election at each local voting place (be at the polling place just before the poll closes to be admitted).
- At the primary precinct meeting they elect polling place officers and also delegates to the county meeting (at the county meeting they elect state delegates, etc.) and they send their issues (like party platform initiatives) to the next level to be agreed upon and sent up to the next level or dropped if not passed.
- Local vote counting: In many locales the voters can wait or come back to the polling place just before the poll closes on that election evening and go to the meeting to watch the vote count, talk and learn about the procedures and opportunities to get involved now or for next time.
- Contribute to the local, county or state elections in many ways, as you donate, post signs, stickers, talk, knock on doors, make phone calls, answer phones, etc.
Run for Office
- Become a better speaker/speech writer and practice on smaller groups before you move to larger responsibilities.
- To run for political office you must register with authorities for the office that you want to run for, then organize with a chairperson and treasurer and send that in to the proper authority, learn about financial reporting, keep accurate records and meet with interested people who can help or donate.
- Be involved in local one-on-one person to person working for your campaign for better ideas to guide and strengthen good values in your workplace school and home area--knocking on doors, registering new voters, phoning or mailings.
- Get volunteers, support and voters for the right values: with individual work and effort to reflect those your values in the local politics.
- Do not fear, even if the wrong person is elected, provided that you are doing only legal activities, are not being rebellious or obstructing others! Hopefully you are in a secure and safe political climate...
- Avoid breaking promises by not making promises for "changes" that are virtually impossible things that you actually do not explain very well. Then when elected don't just say: "Oh it is worse than I knew, and we can not do those things right away. We'll do what we can."
- American polls show that about 85 percent of Americans claim some form of Christian faith. 61 percent of those (making 52 percent over all) state that religion is very important to their personal lives. This shows that most people may want to follow God's will.[1]
- Live by what you say that you believe, knowing that you will be judged accordingly. You and your ideals may continue losing influence by allowing the wrong politics, politicians and judges to set the moral and spiritual mood in your entertainment, area, work, school and society. The immoral probably will not stop immorality or social decline in the marketplace and streets.
- Tell everyone that we need truth, courage and real concern that will never come from bad politicians; rather, it will come from you and the right, thus godly ideals. When you're telling the Good News and it has engaged another person, then that individual will change the world around him or her. This will change the moral and spiritual climate of any locale.
[edit] Tips
- Sure, opponents will continue in their hostility to good ideals in the home, school, workplace and streets. Instead of beating them; you must win the hearts of an individual in your community to then move forward--mostly one person at a time. The influence of individuals will improve your home locale, state, nation and even for many years to come (to the children and grandchildren).
- God’s Word also reminds us to pray! If you have a weak godly influence in your country, the government can be quite hostile to good values. Yet that hostile government does not mean the death of God's influence by or through you!
- How about being on the right side? Change in your locale does not depend on the one who is elected mayor or commissioner. It depends on those people following truth and good morals.
- You are in charge of building in your area but He is in charge of you. It is He Who empowers you to be able to survive hostile government that makes the wrong changes. You see this in Scripture with the leading of His followers during slavery in Egypt as well as during the time of the early Christian Church under the cruel and brutal Roman Empire for hundreds of years.
- The Good News is Growing: One-gets-one: The number doubles. Then that one gets one, while you get one more. Four. Four can become eight, etc. Faith can and will keep growing one-on-one even with your opponents in your face! We see it today in China where the Chinese church has grown to well over 100 million Christians in a few decades, and it has done so mostly without freedom—without Christian television, Christian radio, or Christian books... You do not depend on the government or mass-media to reform people. Reform occurs when each one lives the Christian life, shows and tells another about God and Christ.
[edit] Warnings
- There may be one or all candidates who do not display authentic good-principles in their lives. There may be little hope to see the right changes with such greedy and self-serving leaders?
- You can only expect to receive what each deserves (good or not so good) on this earth as each of us work for the opportunities as we work the good plan. Do not depend on others or government--it will fail you!
- If you think your help or your defeat comes from government and from a good president, then your hope is in human-ability, not in God's plan. In the Old Testament there were repeated warnings of coming troubles of Israel because they had put their trust in politicians (kings and their other leaders) rather than in serving God one-by-one.
- Don't expect very much of politicians who may see you, God and the people as mainly romancing members of some organizations or clubs and getting their own influence without pressing for the "reality of truth." Following a person is not going to change the core of your soul, but the wrong persons can do great harm!
- The right plan is not depending on politicians, appointments or elections; it must depend upon Truth, which can not fail and declares, “... I will build my [people], and the gates of [rebellion] shall not prevail against it.” (Matt. 16:18)
- Failure versus success: "If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear [in] heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (2 Chr. 7:14 NIV)
- 'Never forget: As individuals we all may pass from this life at anytime. Live for and as if your efforts are toward God's will and your ultimate victory which must and will occur in the good! "No man is good; no not even one!" unless they are following the best ideals (God's will)...
