How to Be a Drifter

A drifter is different than a homeless person, drifters choose to be drifters and decide to "live off the land" for their own reasons. Drifters usually have a place to stay and choose to live the drifter lifestyle. They aren't forced into their situation.

Being a drifter is dangerous. Many drifters get killed because their families don't know where they are or they do not have family at all. Because they don't have many connections in society they usually aren't the biggest concern to society and therefore they usually aren't found by society until it is too late to hold anyone responsible.

[edit] Steps

  1. Always have a source of transportation. When you are in a random city that you have "drifted" to, you need to make sure that you know the location of bus stations and railroad tracks. Drifters can make use of railroad tracks by hopping onto trains and going to a new city and a new adventure.
  2. Find the area(s) most kind to drifters. If you hear about a good spot to drift to you need to take advantage of this. These areas are hot spots and usually contain a soup kitchens. It is also advisable to go to restaurants that give out free items. Items such as condiments and bread are very easy to snatch as drifters. Knowing where other drifters live and being associated with other drifters makes you, as a drifter, more comfortable with your drifter lifestyle.
  3. Be knowledgeable of the "eat outside" restaurants. The employees of these restaurants usually don't cater too much attention to the outside portion of their restaurant. Due to the lack of surveillance in the outside areas, drifters should be eager to exploit these sections at all costs. Exploitation consists of taking uneaten food and consuming it for yourself.
    • It might be smart to see the people that ate the food you are about to eat. This may be smart because you don't want to eat food from a person that is clearly showing symptoms of the flu.
  4. Invest in a backpack. Drifters need to be very crafty to be able to live off the land. Drifters also don't know what they will find in their drifting adventures. For this reason they need a backpack so they can carry around items they find, and items that they use as tools to survive.
  5. Carry a can of coins. The most effective and innovative way to get free money is to carry one of these jewels around. The can of coins works because it creates a noise, a sort of jangle, that lets a passerby know that you are in need of a "donation". Jangling around a can of coins helps prepare the passerby to become more comfortable in giving away his spare change by forewarning him.
  6. Have a cardboard sign that displays how unfortunate your life has been. Cardboard "feel sorry for me" signs are a necessity. It is rare to see a drifter without one. This sign draws out an emotion from a potentially "giving" audience. The emotion can be positive or negative, but either way tells the audience to help or not. This is better than not displaying any form of communication whatsoever.
