[edit] Steps

  1. Buy a thick sketch book. Most artist call these a black book. Is where artist sketch all of their graffiti, tags, and stickers. Or buy some paper and carry it with you at all times.
  2. Once you got a sketch book, think of a name for you to tag. Choose a name that you would like to write and stick to it. Remember to look around for someone with the same name (words like face, ghost, king, demon, blaze, perk etc. are all common names). If you want to be really original come up with a longer word that is more cunning and perhaps relates to you or your work.
  3. Now is time to start writing those name on everywhere and anything you want to with a marker.(king sharpies will do)
  4. Then after you research other people graffiti and learn a thing or two. Its time to sketch a good graffiti in your black book
  5. Now is time to get some spray paint & caps(the spray on top of every spray paint can) and tag some where. READ WARNING BELOW
  6. After you have done a couple of tag , your skill and style will get better, and you will no longer be a toy (lowest level ever, have to O.G. style)
  7. Do numerous of tag around, and you will get more notice.
  8. If you wanna stay out of trouble, do these tag somewhere legally.
  9. Of course doing them somewhere illegally have other rewards.
  10. Look for inspiration in your city and on the internet, but do not directly copy anything you see; this will brand you as a toy [meaning a new artist who gets no respect] for a long time. Meet other artists of your skill and of greater skill. You can learn from your superiors in this subculture and help your equals. Always RESEARCH!! Try Researching people such as Banksy. Researching styles can help you to understand the history of graffiti and different style.

  • Buy numorous caps to use.
  • Whenever you run out of paint in a can, alway save the cap.
  • Buy the Good spray paint, cheap one don't work well.
  • DON'T EVER TAKE YOUR BLACK BOOK BOMBING WITH YOU. (bombing mean goin to tag)

  • Never paint or tag over a piece of art that is better than anything you are capable of creating. When going over someone make sure to cover their entire piece, emulsifying a background makes this fairly easy. To avoid any beef you might want to do a big up for them at the side of your piece.
  • Respiratory masks are useful when painting indoors or in confined spaces where the fumes will affect you.
  • Remember, if you do decide to do graffiti illegally, be smart, have morals, and have respect. Graffiti artists create, not destroy.
  • Consider why you want to get involved with graffiti. For some it just feels right, however some other people are in it for all the wrong reasons. To write to look cool in front of your mates being one example.
  • Overall enjoy it, be creative, be original and go wild. Once you understand letter construction you can start innovating some new crazy styles, don't be afraid to go big; you never know where it will take you.
