How to Change a Digital Picture from Color to Black and White

It's a simple step to turn a colour digital photo to black and white using Photoshop.

[edit] Steps

  1. Open Photoshop on your PC. If you don't have a version of Photoshop, you can download a free trial version of Photoshop Elements from the Adobe website.
  2. Open the photo you wish to modify in Photoshop.
  3. In Photoshop, go to the image menu, adjust sub-menu, and select desaturate.
  4. In Photoshop Elements, go to the Enhance menu, Adjust Colour sub-menu, and select Remove Colour.
  5. If neither of these options are available in your software, look for a toolbox to adjust "hue/saturation" and drag the slider for saturation all the way to the left
    • You can also make pictures black and white using Google Picassa, a free photo editing software that is user-friendly and self explanatory. This isn't a shameless promotion, it really works! The program is available as a quick download at picassa.google.com.

[edit] Tips

  • The exact menu structure may be different in various versions of Photoshop (LE, Elements, or the main version) but this action should be possible in all.

[edit] Warnings

  • Save the modified photo in a separate file. If you save it in the same file name, you will lose the colour version forever.
