How to Crack/Break Rubber

Have you ever wanted to just throw a rubber ball on the ground and hopes it cracks into a million pieces? Well it's very well possible.

I want to destroy rubber too.
I want to destroy rubber too.

[edit] Steps

  1. Get a tank of liquid nitrogen, or even some dry ice.
  2. Submerge the rubber in the liquid nitrogen.
  3. Wait a little while because it has to set.
  4. Drop the item on the ground and it will break apart into many little pieces.
  5. Learn why: When something is frozen, the molecules move closer together and do not move as much. Rubber's bouncing is due to the fact that when the rubber hits the ground, the bottom of the ball is compressed (as in flattened a small amount of time)then it becomes spherical which pushes it up. When frozen(aka supercooled) the rubber ball is too close to its other molecules and instead of flattening on the bottom, it breaks into many pieces. Also like rubber, a hammer will shatter if hit upon something when at such temperatures.

  • Cracking a rubber duck is more fun.
  • You can do the same thing with a hammer.
