How to Dispose of Paper
This article contains easy ways to get rid of papers that you no longer need or papers that are cluttering up your house!
[edit] Steps
- Burn it - This is the best way to get rid of important papers with sensitive information. Make sure you are allowed to burn paper in your city, county, or township. Burn the paper in a metal barrel, as to avoid catching the container on fire!
- Compost it - Newspapers and non-glossy paper make excellent compost material, especially in compost bins that have lots of kitchen type scraps. The dry material helps soak up the water content from the kitchen scraps and help oxygenate the pile. And no worries, most ink is non-toxic these days. Most of all, you will be building the health of your soil and garden.
- Shred it or rip it apart - Make sure you do it in small pieces. After that put that in recycle bin. If you regularly have a lot of paper with private information, invest in a shredder.
- Recycle! - Recycling is an easy option, and the most friendly for the environment! Google search "your town + recycling" to see where you can take your paper!
- Stop it from coming in. Stop junk mail at its source. See if your bank or utility will stop sending you paper bills. Get direct deposit and paperless pay stubs, if they're an option. Read the newspaper online. Cancel subscriptions to any periodicals you don't read.
[edit] Tips
- When burning paper, use a metal container. Never leave a fire unattended. Make sure the fire has burned out completely before discarding the ashes. You don't want to start another fire! Don't burn paper that has plastic coating or windows.
- Paper will compost, but remember that it's carbon (brown stuff), so balance it with plenty of nitrogen (green stuff) and keep it damp. Also, while more soy-based and nontoxic inks have been developed in recent years,
- Shredded paper may be used as bedding for worm composting, as well, if it's not glossy. Be sure to keep it moist.
[edit] Warnings
- Be careful of the burning fire. Don't make it too big.
- When recycling papers, be careful! Throwing away receipts that have a credit card number on it is a great way to make yourself an easy target for identity theft!
