How to Find Out if School Is Cancelled for Bad Weather

Sometimes inclement weather (most frequently snow and ice in the school year) can prove dangerous enough to drive that schools may be delayed (to allow snow to melt or ice to thaw) or cancelled (if the weather in question is still continuing throughout the day). Here are a few basic tips to find out if your school is cancelled or not.

[edit] Steps

  1. Realize that most schools have a special information/school emergency hotline that parents and students can call to find out information on school delays or cancellations. Because it comes from your school directly, this is the most reliable way to get information.
  2. Note that if the school has no hotline, or no information has been posted on it yet, check your local news affiliate's website for school delays and cancellations. They should have a accurate list that should be refreshed every few minutes for updated information.
  3. If that doesn’t work, call a friend and ask them if they know any information, but do not call them very early.
  4. If all else fails, get ready and go to school like you would on a normal day. If the parking lot is empty, doors are locked, etc., then the school is most likely closed.

[edit] Warnings

  • Do not call your principal, administrator, or teacher at their home or office if you want to know if school is closed. You will probably get a stern response and/or in big trouble.
