How to Fish for Sand Whiting
Have you ever wondered how those people catch Whiting by the dozens? Whitings make a great table dish and are also good bait for stingray and snapper! Here's a how-to article on how to fish for sand whiting.
[edit] Steps
- You need to have a light rod, about 5-6 feet long, and a reel with 4-6 lb line.
- Tie a small swivel onto the end of the main line, and on the swivel, tie another piece of line 1-3 feet in length(depending on preference).
- Put a small sinker on the swivel. Remember that the stronger the current, the heavier the weight needed.
- On the end of the second piece of line, tie a small hook using a blood knot or a palomar knot.
- Several inches above the hook, clamp a small split shot to the line to make the bait sink to the bottom.
- If you follow these steps, you may very well cause a decline in the local whiting population!
[edit] Tips
- Good baits for whiting include squid, prawn pieces, and small live shrimp.
- Hold the reel in hand. You will feel a light rat-a-tat-tat when the whiting bites. Strike immediately and reel in the fish.
[edit] Warnings
- In case of a snagged hook or sinker, do not give the line a hard, direct pull! Many anglers have been injured by the sudden release of the snagged object, causing the sinker or hook to fly at them like a missile.
- Watch out for riptides.
- Watch where you step in the water! The area may contain stonefish, whose sting is extremely painful!
