How to Fix Squeaky Floorboards

Squeaky floorboards are caused by loose boards rubbing against nails, or each other. And boy, is it irritating. It's not too much of a hassle to sort it so here are Homeserve's quick fixes to silence your creaking floor.

[edit] Steps

  1. You will need:some talcum powder, a damp cloth,a drill, a screwdriver, possible a 50mm screw.
  2. Locating the mischievous floorboard is easy, step on each board one at a time until you hear that annoying 'Eek'. This is your fella.
  3. Sprinkle talcum powder, or flour if you must, around the board and sweep it into the cracks. And a little extra on the nails. The powder will ease the friction between the boards and nails, hopefully eradicating the squeaking. Don't vacuum, but wipe away the excess with a damp cloth.
  4. If the powder trick didn't work, get your drill at the ready. Screw in a 50 mm screw alongside the present nails. You need to put them next to the nails to guarantee they go into a joist and avoiding any pipes and electrics running underneath. The extra fixing will really hold the board in place. No movement, no noise.
