Know that when people are playing a PSOne game by using an old and low quality disc, it is possible that the device suddenly 'hangs' or jams while in the middle of game play.
Try waiting several seconds when the PSOne hangs. If the machine still jams, you can then open the disc cover, forcing the disc to stop immediately.
Close back the cover and the observe what happens. It is highly possible that the game continues after you closed the disc's cover due to the disc re-spinning similar to a restart in a PC. If all goes well, you can now continue to play.
