How to Fix a Squeaky Floor With Squeekender

Squeeky floorboards can be fixed using basic household tools. This article describes a specific commercial product called squeekender which does the same thing.

Squeaky floors are caused by the separate pieces of the floor (floorboards or the sub floor sheets) rubbing against one another; the intermittent "friction" causes vibrations and therefore, noise. If you prohibit the boards from moving, no squeaks. Here is how to bring back the peace and quiet to home sweet home.

[edit] Steps

  1. Note that it's such a new product that many stores don't have it in stock yet; if you are in the USA, tell the hardware store that it's item #5396270. The cost is usually under US$8. For other countries, it may not yet be available but ask. Don't worry, it's easy to install and you can view videos showing how to install them on their website. Follow the next steps to install it and see video below.
  2. From the underside of floor, locate the vicinity of the squeak.
  3. Insert the hanger bolt through the anchor plate. Position the plate against the joist.
  4. Screw anchor plate to floor, touching nearest joint in general area of squeak.
  5. Slip joist bracket over joist and hanger bolt.
  6. Install washer and hand tighten hex nut with wrench until squeaking stops.

[edit] Tips

  • Be sure not to over tighten the Squeakender. This can be done when tightening the hex nut.
  • When you tighten the hex nut, you will hear the squeak stop, because you are pulling your floor board back down to the sub-floor.
