How to Flush a British Toilet

By following these instructions, you will be able to successfully flush a British toilet which you may encounter in older pubs or bed & breakfast places. These instructions refer to the type of toilet that features a lever flush.

[edit] Steps

  1. Put your hand on the handle.
  2. Apply downward pressure on the handle. DON'T pull too hard or you may snap the chain or lever at the top.
  3. Release handle and the toilet will continue flushing. Contrary to popular belief, there is no need to hold the handle down.
  4. Understand that with this type of flush, you are pumping a small amount of water to start a syphon.
  5. Be aware that this type of toilet is now generally replaced with push-button ones, which require just a gentle press to open the flush valve.
