How to Germinate Seeds
This guide will tell you how to start your own plants from seed.
[edit] Steps
- Get all the necessary materials (listed in the Things You'll Need section). The seeds should be less than two years old. The growing medium can be loose potting mix or, preferably, soilless potting mix, because it doesn't contain any diseases or weeds. The container should have drainage holes.
- Plant the seeds. If you are using small individual containers, put a few in each. It is important to plant them the depth specified by seed bag (if your seeds are store bought). Usually, the depth that they should be planted in is one to two times the length of the seed. Some smaller seeds should be planted on the surface of the soil. Cover the container with plastic to keep water in, but make sure you take it off once the seeds begin to sprout.
- Water the plants properly. Only water them when the top of the soil is dry, but don't over water. Keep the soil damp, but not soaked. It is best to water the plants from the bottom.
- Provide warmth for the seeds. Before they sprout, they do not need any sunlight. Preferably, keep the soil temperature at least above 70ºF.
- Wait for the seeds to sprout.
[edit] Warnings
- Once the plants have sprouted, keep them away from slugs or other plant-eating creature, as they can eat all of your plants very quickly.
