How to Get Bees out of Your Classroom
If you are trying to teach and a bee or wasp flies into your classroom, you will have difficulty keeping the students' attention. If you've had this happen, you'll know that in most cases, maintaining order is nearly impossible. Students won't listen or learn until the bee is gone. To remove a single bee or wasp from a room, follow these steps.
[edit] Steps
To Catch
- Trap the insect under a cup against a hard flat surface.
- Once the pest is trapped, slip an index card (or piece of card-stock) under the mouth of the cup.
- You can now transport the the bee or wasp outdoors. Be sure to keep the mouth of the cup covered. If you'd like to keep the insect, place the entire cup and card into a freezer.
To Squash
- Get a notebook.
- Roll it up.
- Wait until the bee lands.
- Swing.
- Wipe up the mess with a paper towel.
[edit] Tips
- If you cannot catch the offending insect, turn off all the lights, open the doors, and all windows. Bees and wasps are drawn to light, and will eventually fly out. Don't forget to close the windows once your insect is gone.
- Most children are fascinated by stinging insects. After freezing the insects, they can be safely examined, handled, or pinned to a board.
[edit] Warnings
- Some students may have violent allergies to bee stings. You should ask ALL of you students if they are allergic to ANY insect bites or foods at the beginning of the year. Students with bee/wasp sting allergies should be excused from the room immediately.
- If you are attempting to catch the insect:
- Move slowly until you are in a good position to trap the bee.
- Once the bee has landed on a flat surface, and you are within arm's reach of it, put the cup over it very quickly.
- If you miss more than three times, stop. Give the insect time to settle down before continuing. The last thing you want in a classroom is a mad bee.
[edit] Things You'll Need
- Disposable cup. Clear, plastic cups are best.
- Index card or piece of card stock large enough to cover the mouth of the cup
