How to Get Good Grades As a Teen Without Burying Yourself Under Books

Ever wondered how all those people get good grades without studying all night and all day? Well, it's all about attitude.

[edit] Steps

  1. Perform at your best possible. When you do a piece of schoolwork, always do your best. If you do it to the best of your ability, then it is very likely that you will get a high grade. This doesn't mean get stressed, just think "I can do this".
  2. Listen carefully. When your teacher is talking, actually listen to him/her. What they are saying could affect how well you do in a test. This doesn't mean pay rapt attention to her, just tune in to what they're saying.
  3. Watch your teachers and talk to people who have had them before. Learn what kinds of work they tend to expect. Many teachers will drop hints about what they are going to put on a test, so pay attention to phrases like "You might want to write this down."
  4. Chill. When it comes to a test, don't get totally stressed. Don't study all night before because you will need the sleep. You will hurt your chances of scoring well if you're half asleep on the day of the test. If it's a topic you're good at, revise all the bits that you don't know. Get your parents to test you. If you're not good at the subject, then revise for 1/2 an hour maximum each day, if you can, 2 weeks before the test. And on the day ask your friends. Get them to test you and test them, but without any books.
  5. Tell a teacher to liven up. If you find a subject boring, 75% of the time it could be the teacher. If you find this the case, then tell someone. Their job is to teach you, and teach you well. If you are not enjoying it, then they are not doing their job.
  6. Find out what type of learner you are. There are 3 main types of learner:

    • Auditory learners - learn best from listening to things;
    • Visual learners - who learn best from seeing, i.e. reading, things; and
    • Physical learners - learn best from doing things.
  7. Act accordingly. Just because someone says you should learn one way doesn't mean you have to learn that way. Find the way that suits your style best.
  8. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Talk to your teachers after or before class, or email them. Besides getting better at the subject matter, you can benefit greatly from teachers who get to know you.
  9. Enjoy the experience of learning! You won't be able to get good grades if you are totally depressed.

[edit] Tips

  • Use your time wisely. If you need to do work early, do it early. Then, if you get stuck, then you can ask for help.
  • Try a bit of music while working. Sometimes this can help your mind relate what you're learning. No hard rock though, and don't play it loud.
  • If you make your teacher like you as a person they will be easier on you especially if you buy them gifts on holidays.
  • Start your homework when you get home - not at 10:00 at night. You will get more sleep and be more awake the next day so you can pay attention in class.

[edit] Warnings

  • Don't try to get your grades up quickly. Go at a rate that suits you, but don't let yourself slack off.

[edit] Things You'll Need

  • Determination.
  • Perseverance.
  • Confidence.
