How to Get Rid of Sunstroke

The sun can be great, but it can also cause problems. If you've been out in the sun too long and get sunstroke, here's how to get better.

[edit] Steps

  1. Get out of the sun!
  2. Lower your body temperature by putting a cool, wet rag on the back of your neck. This will cool you down faster than just putting the cloth on your face.
  3. Remove any extra clothing like a hat or shoes and socks to aid in the cooling process.
  4. Lie down and put a cool, damp cloth over your forehead. Raise your feet a few inches to avoid potential shock.
  5. Drink (sip) cool water slowly. Too much too fast can induce shock.
  6. Start on any diluted clear or light colored Gatorade or Powerade - dilute with water 50%. (Full strength, these will upset your stomach.)
  7. Try frozen popsicles. These are good for children and adults alike.
  8. If necessary, take Tylenol for the headache.
  9. If flu-like symptoms persist, go see the doctor immediately.

[edit] Tips

  • Always wear a hat when out in the sun, especially if you are susceptible to sunstroke.
  • Bring water bottles to keep you hydrated in the sun.
  • The second you feel it coming on, get out of the sun and lie down.
  • If you have to hose your self off every 20 minutes to cool off from the heat effects.

[edit] Warnings

  • If you are not feeling better in a half hour, get to a doctor as there could be more going on.
  • Long exposure to the sun, unprotected, can bring on more than sunstroke. Always be careful.
