How to Get Someone's Phone Number

Finally getting that certain someone's phone number is not difficult to do if you go about it the right way. Here is some advice on how to do so.

[edit] Steps

  1. Get to know them. Getting to know this person at least a little bit would help a lot, actually. Just try to start a friendly conversation with this person. About their day, a homework or job assignment, that sort of thing. Talking about anything that you both have in common should work well. It's easier than you think to get to know a person. Once you are at least slightly familiar with each other, you can go about the rest of the steps.
  2. One way to go about getting someone's phone number is to start an in-depth conversation. At some point, you can abruptly end the conversation by saying something such as: 'I totally forgot, I've got to be at a friend's house soon.' Though you may want to continue the conversation at the moment, you can achieve your goal by saying something such as, 'We should definitely talk later, how can I contact you?' It may seem straightforward, but sometimes, that's the best thing. Most likely, you will receive a phone number.
  3. If you're in school, try to see if you can get paired up with them for a project. You'll have to exchange numbers at some point to keep in touch.
  4. This method will take confidence: If this is a person you've known for a while, ask if you can see their cell phone, because you think it's interesting or cool. Then, add your number first. Let them know you've done so, and ask them to see if you did it correctly by calling you. This may not work out so well depending on your relationship with the person.
    • Alternately, if you draw any sort of attention to your phone, they may ask you themselves.
  5. If you see the person with their phone, just say: 'Nice phone, what's your number?'
  6. If you are too shy to ask yourself you can try a few of the following:
    • If you are in school, your school directory may have this person's number.
    • Phone books will sometimes list numbers, but this is not as common anymore.
    • If your friend has the number, you can ask them for it.
    • If your friend is closer to this person than you are, you can ask them to get the number.

[edit] Tips

  • Don't try to be too obvious about the fact that you are trying to hold a conversation with someone just so you can get your number.

[edit] Warnings

  • Be mindful of your relationship with the person whose number you are trying to obtain. Rushing some of these steps with a person you hardly know will make them uncomfortable.
  • Drawing attention to your own phone is different than practically begging to have it stolen.
