How to Get over a Fish's Death

Have you just found your favorite fish dead in it's tank? And are you stuck with the memory of your dead fish? Well, don't be sad. Your fish had a happy life. It probably died of old age or some sort of illness. Here is how to get over it:

[edit] Steps

  1. Put away your fish's tank or fishbowl (whatever he/she lived in). Put the tank or fishbowl in a box and put it in the far end of your closet, storage or drawer. Of course, you won't be able to do this if there are still fish living in the bowl or tank.
  2. Put a nice plant or decoration in the place where the fish tank used to be. Try to fill in the empty space.
  3. If your thinking about getting a new fish, don't throw away your old fish food (it might come in handy). Just keep it in a faraway place where you can't see it. But if you don't want a new fish, make sure to throw away the old fish food or give it to a friend who owns fish. It might bring back some painful memories.
  4. If you have things that remind you of your fish, put them in a scrapbook. These things might include a brochure from the pet store about the fish, drawings, photos, the fake or real plants from the tank...etc;
  5. If you have more then one fish in the same tank where the old one used to be, make a better relationship with the ones that are left. Even if the fish that died was your favorite, get a new favorite fish. Or you can always get a new one that looks exactly like that fish or one that has nothing similar, whatever you want. It's your fish.
  6. Make sure to know if your fish or fishes needed or need a filter or different temperatures of water. Most tanks come with filters already installed, but if you have a tank that does not, they are very easy to install. Prevent suffering, injury, and death of your remaining fish!

[edit] Tips

  • Don't let your friends tell you what type of new fish, tank, food or decorations to buy. It's your call. They don't know what you like or want.
  • Even if your still heartbroken about your dead fish, don't abandon your old ones. Now they need you more then ever.
  • If your too depressed to even look at your other fish, take them back to the pet store or give them to a family member or trusted friend. They will take good care of them. Just remember this, if you give them back to the pet store, they will probably be sold again. So make sure that you really don't want them anymore.
  • Once you get over your favorite fish's death, and if you are still using the tank/bowl for other fish, you may want to put something in there in memory of your fish. It could be a tiny hand-made tombstone, or a pretty rock or seashell with a coloring and pattern that resembles your fish. But if the memories are still too painful or you just want to forget, you may not want to do this.

[edit] Warnings

  • If your sure that your fish died of a sickness, your other ones might be in danger too. Make sure to wash the tank or fishbowl. The vets can't do anything to help except give you a new type of fish food.
