Sometimes you just feel like you don't really know your hamster that well. Here are some tips that will get you bonded to your hammy.
[edit] Steps
- Let your hamster settle into its habitat -- leave it alone for the first few days.
- Figure out a name for your hamster. Repeat your hamster's name a few times every time you handle it so your hamster gets used to its name, and your voice.
- Wash your hands before handling your hamster or your hamster might mistake your hand for food. Hamsters don't have a very good eyesight!
- Play with your hamster when you're sure it's awake, and ready. Give your hamster some treats, so it knows you're a friend. Let your hamster get used to you. A hamster needs interaction, but don't offer too much!
- Wash your hands after you play with him/her.
[edit] Tips
- Try playing with your hamster towards the night. Hamsters are nocturnal, which means they sleep in the day, and are awake at night.
- Establish a routine. If you take your hamster out every night before you go to bed, or every morning, it will look forward to spending time with you.
- Make sure you're giving your hamster the correct foods, not ones that will make them ill! Hamsters like variety, and you can give them fruits and vegetables daily as well as healthy cereal like Cheerios or Shredded Wheat.
- Spend time watching your hamster. Get use to it's normal patterns and which food it prefers. This will help you bond.
- Make your hamster take treats out of your hand. It will learn that you are the one providing the treats and will be more likely to seek out your attention.
[edit] Warnings
- Don't wake your hamster up. They will get angry.
- Don't be mean to your hamster!
- Don't take your hamster out of the house/safety. It could get harmed by other animals.
