How to Give Yourself a Makeover With the Clothes You Already Have

You want to revive your image but you don't have money for a shopping spree? Follow these simple steps for big changes.

[edit] Steps

  1. Think about and visualize what sort of makeover you are trying to achieve. Find pictures in magazines or the Internet of the looks you are trying to emulate.
  2. Think about what kind of alterations need to be made to make this look good on you. Work with your body style, not against it.
  3. Alter your hair and make up. These can be changed with simple techniques that are unique to what you are trying to create.
  4. Clothes can be changed in innumerable ways. You can change the neckline of a shirt by cutting it. Sew it up to looked refined, or leave it unhemmed to look punk.
  5. The length of your skirts can be shortened and hemmed. They can be lengthened by letting out the hem and re hemming. Or you can sew an additional layer to the hem.
  6. You can change trousers or jeans in a number of ways. You can make plain jeans into bell bottoms by cutting up the side and sewing extra fabric into them. Or you can make them drain pipes by taking them in at the sides (you'll need a sewing machine for this). You can also alter the length to make them capris, or shorts, or anything in between. Rips are a cool look right now... but they don't have to come from the store. Do them yourself.
  7. Use dye, it is inexpensive and versatile. You can change the color of just about any piece of clothing.
  8. Layering or combining different pieces of clothing is also a good way to get a different look out of an old piece. Get a couple of good tank tops...some plain, and some trimmed with lace...these are cool right now. You can use these under any shirt to make it look like a totally new outfit. If you have any plain white long-sleeve tees, wear these under bright coloured polos. It's a really cool look.

[edit] Tips

  • Ask friends and family for advice, such as the kinds of necklines they think would suit you. Then, if you agree, you can alter shirts to make new necklines.
  • Customise old, boring clothes with ribbon, colourful buttons or beads, sequins and anything else that you like.
  • Look through magazines for ideas on how to layer clothes and what looks good together.
  • Accessories can change a boring outfit; look at what you already have and don't be afraid to experiment with clothes and accessory combinations that you might never have tried before. It might look good!
  • Search the Internet for ideas. This could be fashion websites, websites for clothes stores, anything! The models clothes could give you ideas about what to wear with what if you have similar clothes.

[edit] Warnings

  • Be careful with the scissors when you are cutting clothes or making rips, and don't make the rips too big.
