How to Log In to the wikiHow IRC Room

wikiHow's IRC (Internet relay chat) room is a place for all wikiHow community members to chat and collaborate. Unfortunately, IRC clients aren't the easiest things to use.

[edit] Steps

Easy Method: Without an IRC Client

  1. Click this link: http://irc.wikihow.com/
    • Type your user name into the box.
    • Click login.

With a Desktop IRC Client

  1. Open your IRC client.
  2. In the entry bar, type /server irc.freenode.net
  3. When the page finishes loading, type /join #wikiHow
  4. Now you can begin chatting! Feel free to ask anybody who is in the channel for help using wikiHow. Most can give you pointers.

[edit] Tips

  • IRC commands can take a little while to get used to, but don't get discouraged. It's all about practice.
  • Say something. If nobody is talking, say hi, then wait a while. If this is your first visit, you may want to introduce yourself for people. If there hasn't been activity in the channel lately, it's possible nobody is watching too closely.
  • Try joining the chat room at various times of day if you don't find anybody in it the first time. Just like any other public place, people come and go.
  • If you are worried about someone impersonating you, try registering your username.
    1. Log in with the username you want to use.
    2. Type /msg nickserv register <your-password> <your-email-address> and replace <your-password> with the password of your choice and replace <your-email-address> with your email address. Then press enter.
    3. Check your email for a registration verification email then follow the instructions in it.
    4. Type "/msg nickserv set hide email on". Then press enter.

[edit] Warnings

  • While occasional socializing is acceptable in the WikiHow channel, excessive chatting is usually frowned upon. Use this channel for collaboration.
  • Be civil. You can be blocked for foul language, flooding (putting a great deal of text into the channel), and other disruptions.
  • The wikiHow web client linked in this article is the easiest way to get to know IRC, but it is limited. Many commands don't work as usual. As you become familiar with IRC, it's best to download and install a free IRC client.

[edit] Things You'll Need

  • An IRC client or a web browser.
