Nobody wears a school uniform by choice. But cheer up-there are loads of things you can do to maintain your usual gorgeous self, even in the strictest of uniforms!
[edit] Steps
Accessories
- Accessorize. Wear jewelry. Pick out some cute earrings, maybe a cool necklace and bracelet or two. If your school doesn't allow jewelry, try getting some cute studs, and maybe one of those plaited bracelets made of wool in different colors. They're easy to make, and look great. Try getting an attractive wristwatch. They're handy and look fantastic. And of course, don't forget the accessories in your hair. Use cute hair clips, colorful scrunchies, and cool headbands. Accessories have a big impact on how you look.
- Choose stylish school supplies. It helps if not only you look your best, but if your things look their best! Try covering your books. Personalize your locker with pictures, quotes, and a good background. Buy a cute pencil case. Label your stuff in pretty typing. And don't forget your school bag or backpack. Decorate your school bag. Put stickers on the zips, label your name in your best markers, and put a couple of cool key rings there. Maybe you can even get your friends to write personal messages on it.
- If allowed add a hat, cool jacket and scarves to accessorize your wardrobe
- Pick a purse: If you're the type that has to have things close to you at all times, this one's for you. Go shopping for a purse. Fill it with things you need everyday at school, like pens, lip gloss, erasers, etc.
- Shop for pieces you are allowed to add to the uniform but look better than what is offered. For example: if you are allowed to wear your own cardigan but it must be a school color try shopping for a cardigan of good quality and cut for your shape.
- Tomboys should try to wear tight fitting tops. Wearing everything too large appears sloppy.
- Wear tighter fitting clothing but not too tight. You can get tighter fitting polos at Aeropostale or Hollister. Don't wear everything too tight. Pair the tighter shirt with your regular uniform to add interest.
Makeup
- Apply simple makeup, such as concealer on blemishes and on under eye circles, some lip balm on lips, and a light application of mascara. Simplicity is attractive. Lipgloss should be sheer, with only a hint of color, and a tiny shine. Use neutral shadows, and pinks for your blush and lips.
- Visit a makeup counter and get age appropriate makeup. Try to focus on colors that bring out the color of your eyes. Don't apply too much.
- Wake up and do your makeup: Sometimes that lip gloss or blue eyeshadow does the trick. Try not to go overboard, a little eyeliner, mascara, and maybe a little blush should do it. If you're not allowed to wear make up, try some skin tones if you're willing to take the risk of sneaking it. Some lip gloss is passable in some schools.
- Wear a chapstick or tinted lip balm if you're not in to lip gloss. Try brushing your lips with your tooth brush and then putting on chapstick to make your lips look soft and beautiful!
- Wear a soft colored lip gloss to make you look and feel pretty.
- Wear makeup. Bad day? Just not feeling your absolute best? Don't worry, makeup will help. Be sure not to ever go over the top with makeup. Just use your favorite eyeshadow, a bit of blush, maybe some eyeliner and a bit of lip gloss. Carry a mirror with you for touch-ups. If your school doesn't allow makeup, try using some blush and a bit of cute, tinted lip gloss. If you're willing, try a bit of eyeliner, but don't overdo it. And of course, mascara, not only does it look good but it also makes your eyes appear bigger, and more attractive.
Skin Care
- Apply baby oil while you're still wet. It works great while wet and lasts longer to keep your skin moisturized throughout the day. It also leaves a nice clean scent that doesn't overpower the shower gel.
- Apply your acne treatments,(if you have to) followed by moisturizer.
Clothing Tips
- Change the way your uniform looks by getting a top that's a bit baggy on you. It can look awesome. But don't go overboard by getting a size 17 when you'# Choose your uniform wisely. Don't get anything too big because uniforms often run in unflattering shapes. Try them on before purchasing. Shop in the mall for the uniform requirements. Go to stores like Gap, J Crew, Ralph Lauren, Hollister, Aeropostle, American eagle, and Abercrombie for those certain needs. They'll sell uniforms as well, though they're better fitting. If you are tight on cash go to Target, Wal-Mart or check some outlets.
- Don't kill yourself over kilts: If you're stuck with the dreaded kilt, you can personalize that, too. Hang some charms from the kilt pin, or replace the pin with a button or brooch.
- For shoes wear ballet flats. They're perfect for everyday wear. For comfort, tennis shoes work well.
- Incorporate trends.Try to incorporate new fashion trends into your school uniform. If your uniform consists of a skirt and top, tuck your shirt into your skirt. If you are really into Japanese fashion, wear those white baggy socks, or wear socks with patterns.
- Personalize your outfit and make it your own.
- Shop for adventurous shoes: This might go against policy for many schools, so check it out with them. In lots of schools, it's only "off limits" to wear sandals or flip-flops. The sky's the limit. Even if it's school rules that you have to wear brown shoes, you could always fire up the trusty glue gun and add some flair. Try patches, sequins, beads, or buttons.
Grooming
- Be sure to take good care of your nails. File them if needed. Buff them to keep them shiny and reapply a nice polish if your color is chipping. Keep them a tasteful length. Not too long, not too short (just a tiny bit above the tips).
- Brush your teeth 2-3 times a day with whitening paste.
- Follow up with flossing and mouthwash.
- Have fun with your nails: Your fingers don't have to be blah. Pick up some fun nail polish colors. If you're feeling adventurous, try painting some designs on with toothpicks or cotton swabs. Using a different color for each nail or hand could look cool, too! However be careful and read your school handbook for rules against distracting colors, French manicures, or cute designs on the nails.
- Put on good deodorant that not only smells yummy, but helps prevent sweating. Put on an antiperspirant before bed.
- Shower daily and keep yourself clean and well groomed.
- Shower once a day (or twice if you need it) with a nice smelling body wash.
- Spend extra time on your nails, make up and hair. These are things you can change that aren't a part of the uniform.
Hair Tips
- For hair do bumpy ponytails, pigtails, messybuns and princess ponies. These are very cute and they stand out.
- Hair is your personal trait. Do whatever you want with it... almost whatever. Keep it healthy, be sure to get regular trims, and wash daily. Use hair serum to get rid of frizz, and use mousse to get a certain style, and use hairsprays to seal a certain style. If you ever decide to color, or perm or whatever go to the salon. They're professionals they know what they're doing...they'll recommend some styles, and some health tips for your locks so listen and take notes if possible.
- Personalize your hair: If you've got long hair, try putting it in cute braids, a side ponytail (style of the '80s!), pigtails, or a neat bun. You could always shoot for getting your tresses highlighted (which would work on any length hair). Just be sure to check with your office of admissions about what restrictions there might be. Some schools don't allow highlights of "unnatural colors" (pink, green, blue, etc.) Don't be afraid to experiment with rubber bands, hair clips, headbands...but be sure that it is okay to wear certain accessories. Some schools don't allow highlights, dying your hair, hair tipping, or clip on hair extensions.
- Style your hair. Don't do your hair in the same style every day. Wash your hair with a good shampoo and conditioner at least 3 times a week, and experiment with styles. There are loads of choices! If you're feeling dull, get a haircut, or get your hair layered.
[edit] Tips
- Always be yourself and never change your personality. Remember: "A person makes the clothes, clothes don't make the person."
- Make sure your collar is undone, your shirt is untucked and your tie is in a cool knot. (Beware: Some schools are very strict about this).
- smile and keep your confidence. No matter how you look, you're beautiful, always remember that.
- Be careful when buying your uniform. Having a well-fitted uniform can really help. Alter it or have it altered if you need to.
- Be confident. Having poise and confidence and a good attitude can go a long way toward improving your looks and making you an individual in a sea of uniforms.
- Be sure you're following your school dress code. It's easy to not follow.
- Buy cute accessories like headbands and ponytail holders. They don't have to be expensive and they add a lot of personality to your outfit.
- Carry a small bag around with you, packed with things you need, such as lip balm, mints, a mirror, etc.
- Don't go overboard with anything like make up and hair. You could do some damage.
- Don't listen to what other people say about you because 99% of the time it is a lie.
- Leggings are very in to wear as pants or under a skirt. If you wear them as pants make sure you have a long shirt or camisole with cardigan. Not everyone looks good with this look so play with it and ask for an opinion before you leave the house.
- Plan everything the night before.
- Short skirts CAN look hot, but remember not to go overboard. They are best if you have really nice legs ;)
- Sometimes you just gotta be beautiful on the inside try just being unique.
- Steer clear of nose rings. If you have one, and it's not an option to remove, try looking for a tiny stud to use during classes. As soon as that bell rings, feel free to do the switcheroo!
- Try a contrasting jumper and shirt with the shirt showing and sleeves rolled up. You could also fold the shirt sleeves over the jumper.
- Try having your tie really fat and short or you could have it really thin and long!
- Try wearing just a polo shirt without a jumper, it looks good to boys. but make sure it isn't baggy and don't wear the collar up, no matter how 'cool' you think you look like that.
- Wear coloured hair ties with badges on them on your wrists instead of bracelets if your school is strict, they can't tell you off for having a few extra hair ties!
- Whatever you do, make sure you don't overdo it. You want to look formal, yet sophisticated. Not like a Christmas tree or an ad for makeup.
[edit] Warnings
- If, on the first day of school, a teacher/principal/professor lets you know that something you're wearing isn't acceptable for school, make note of it in your planner or notebook. That way you won't be embarrassed when you get a detention for going against dress code.
- Steer clear of key chains that make noises. You could bump it the wrong way and send funny noises out to the whole algebra class. Talk about embarrassing!
- Keep it tasteful. If any of your accessories could be deemed offensive, your teachers are less likely to look the other way. Be especially careful if you're attending a religious school.
- Shop with a copy of your dress code and uniform policy to avoid expensive mistakes.
- If in doubt of a dress code or uniform policy you should ask an administrator at the school to clarify before you make a purchase which could violate it.
- Be careful when decorating your bag and locker. Some schools do not allow pictures on lockers, and if you all have the same bag at your school, make sure you don't totally change it.
- Never overdo your makeup. Much better to be and look tired rather than be pulled up and in trouble.
- Try to keep your hair simple. Some schools don't allow colorful hair clips, bands, or scrunchies.
- Know the dress code at your school. Push the boundaries, but try not to exceed them or else you could be in a detention when you could be socializing.
- Do not wear a school tie with a polo shirt, they are to be worn with shirts only or else you will look silly.
- Do not use key chains that make noises!
