How to Make Black Eyed Peas Old Virginia Style
This recipe for black eyed peas dates to pre-Civil War times. A Southern tradition holds that eating them on New Year's Day brings good luck the whole year 'round!

- Black-eyed peas
- 3 slices of bacon
- Drained tomato chunks
- Dark molasses
- Black pepper

- Soak and boil dry black-eyed peas per package instructions.
- Fry 3 slices of bacon, preferably in an iron skillet.
- Drain and add the black-eyed peas to the cooked bacon, breaking the slices up with a spatula as you do.
- Add: tomato chunks (drained), dark molasses, black pepper
- Mash the peas as they fry to form a cake-like layer; turn to avoid burning.
- Serve hot and crispy!
