How to Make Bran Scones

This is a delicious breakfast treat made in 30 minutes total. It's also good with soup and can be frozen.

  • Plain (or self raising flour)
  • Heaped Tablespoons of bran flakes
  • Level tablespoon of sugar
  • ½oz margarine
  • 2 level teaspoons of baking powder (only 1 if using self raising flour)
  • Egg made up to 6 fl.oz with milk
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Sift flour into bowl and add other dry ingredients mix lightly.
  2. Rub in margarine to fine crumb state.
  3. Crack egg into measuring jug and make up to 6 fluidoz with milk.
  4. Whisk egg into milk.
  5. Add milk/egg mixture to bowl and stir in to create a slightly sticky dough.
  6. Flour a 14" baking tray.
  7. Split the dough into two equal parts and with well floured hands take one piece and form it into a round about 1" thick, place this on the floured baking tray and flatten further to just over ½" thick, with a knife make two cuts across the dough to divide it into 4 equal segments. Repeat with second half of the dough.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 230ºC (450ºF) for approx 15 minutes.

  • These scones are delicious for breakfast with lashing of butter and marmalade or with a nice bowl of home made soup for lunch.
  • They can be frozen and one scone takes about 30 seconds to defrost in a microwave at full power (700W). They are also nice defrosted cut open and toasted.
  • Make a batch on Sunday morning and have two for breakfast, then freeze the other 6 and you can have a delicious bran scone for breakfast each morning Monday to Saturday.
