How to Make Fresh Breadcrumbs

It may seem difficult to make fresh breadcrumbs from soft, new bread but it is possible. Here is how.

[edit] Steps

  1. Purchase the bread of choice. The best bread for breadcrumbs is bread without seeds, softened grains or other large pieces. Whether you choose wholemeal or white is up to you.
  2. Select the amount of slices that you wish to slice.
  3. Place these in a freezer bag and put into the freezer.
  4. Allow to freeze.
  5. Remove from the freezer. Grate the frozen slices one by one on a metal grater. The crumbs should form instantly and they will be fine and even in texture.

[edit] Tips

  • You can separate frozen bread slices by slipping a butter knife between them.
  • If flavour enhancement is important, consider making breadcrumbs from flavoured breads, such as potato bread or pumpkin bread.
