How to Make Ginger Syrup

Ginger Syrup is easy to make and versatile in use. You can mix it into club soda or seltzer and serve it cold as Gingerale, or serve it hot as tea.

[edit] Steps

  1. Make a simple syrup: Mix 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a sauce pan. Bring it to a boil. Simmer gently until the sugar dissolves. Stir occasionally.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of thinly sliced fresh ginger. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat; let cool, then add 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice.
  4. Pour into container and refrigerate until ready to use.

[edit] Tips

  • Gingerale: Put 1-2 tablespoons of the strained ginger syrup into a glass, fill with cold club soda or seltzer. Add a sprig of fresh mint or basil and ice if you wish.
  • Leave the ginger in the syrup for additional flavor.
  • Add a teaspoon or more to a cup of hot or iced tea.
  • Make tea using 1-2 tablespoons of the ginger syrup with hot water.
  • Save the ginger to use in baked goods, including gingerbread!
  • Make a Ginger Mojito - follow the directions for Gingerale and add a jigger of rum.
