How to Make Hardtack

Hardtack is basically bread that is hard because is doesn't have yeast. Back in the day, it was a popular meal for soldiers and sailors because it didn't grow mold and was easy to prepare.

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp salt

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl.
  3. Knead dough and roll out till its 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Cut the dough into 3x3 squares. Poke a 3x3 series of holes in the center, evenly spaced.
  5. Bake in preheated oven.
  6. Take out when they're a light golden brown.
  7. Let it cool for a while.

  • You can make it sweeter by adding sugar and/or cinamon.
