How to Make Hush Puppies

The story goes fisherman cooked hush puppies to feed their barking dogs hence the name --- hush puppies.

  • 2 cups corn meal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg

  1. Preheat deep fat fryer to 370 degrees F.
  2. Sift dry ingredients together.
  3. Spoon dry ingredients into a small bowl.
  4. Add onions, buttermilk and water to dry ingredients.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Add melted butter and egg.
  7. Blend ingredients together.
  8. Drop batter by small spoonfuls into hot fat.
  9. Fry until golden.
  10. Makes about 30 hush puppies.

  • Use care when cooking with a deep fat fryer.
  • Sift together corn meal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and sugar. Pour mixture into a small mixing bowl.
  • Add onions, buttermilk and water and mix well. Add melted butter and egg. Blend.
  • Drop by spoonfuls into deep fat fryer (370 degrees F) and fry until golden brown.
  • Makes about 30 hush puppies.
