How to Post a Comment on wikiHow Talk Pages

One of the more effective ways to communicate with your fellow editors is through wikiHow's Talk Pages. They provide a way to contact a particular editor to discuss article improvements, provide feedback and encouragement, keep in touch regarding wikiHow projects and other important topics. This article will help you to learn to use talk pages properly.

[edit] Steps

  1. Use any of the following methods to find a user's talk page:

    • Go to their user page and click on the "Talk" tab.

      image:talk_page1.png
    • Click on the "Talk" link next to any of their edits in the history of an article.
    • Go directly to the talk page by entering: "http://wikihow.com/User_talk:USERNAME (replace USERNAME with the user name of the person whose talk page you wish to use).
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the user's talk page to find the box in which you will type your message.
  3. Think about wikiHow's values before typing your message, especially if you have something negative or critical to say.

    • Be civil: It's perfectly OK to disagree with someone, even strongly, but it's not OK to rude or to attack them personally in the process.
    • Assume good faith: Remember that we give people here the benefit of the doubt where possible. Remember that every person working on wikiHow has made mistakes, and that good editors sometimes make bad edits. Assume that these errors were made in good faith, and consider how to coach the editor in a constructive manner.
  4. Type your message into the box at the bottom of the page. You are free to use wiki code to format your message, add templates or images or your signature.
  5. Review the message before sending it.
  6. Click on the "Post" button when you are done to send your message.

[edit] Tips

  • When replying to a comment on a talk page, be sure to click "Reply to USERNAME" on bottom the sender's message to be taken to their talk page. If you simply reply below their message, you'll actually be replying on your own talk page (something nearly everyone here has done).
  • If you find yourself particularly angry or frustrated and want to reply to someone who has made you upset, it may be a very good idea to wait a while before posting to their talk page.
  • Remember that talk page discussions are public. They can be read by anyone on wikiHow and are reviewed by Recent Changes Patrol. Don't write anything on the talk pages that you don't want everyone to be able to read.
  • Use IRC or the General Chat Forum instead of talk pages for friendly chat with other wikiHow editors.

[edit]Warnings

  • Talk pages are primarily intended to be used for discussions related to wikiHow, not personal matters. Excessive chatters may be warned or even temporarily blocked from using wikiHow.
