How to Write a How to Article

Writing a how-to article is your chance to share your knowledge and special talents. Different venues are in need of informative articles. This article provides a general guide. (it helps 6th graders for their test on how to write a how-to article!

  1. Decide upon a subject. Think of the things you have done, today or in the past, that would be helpful to others.
  2. Choose a title that uses commonly searched words to describe your specific technique.
  3. Write an introduction that summarizes the content of your article. Include a question, within the opening line, to capture a reader's interest. An example of an opening line: "Have you ever wondered how to write an engaging introduction to a how-to article?" An example of a closing line: "Follow this procedure to learn how:" Place a brief summary, describing the content of the article, between the opening and closing lines.
  4. Add a list of supplies and materials, if needed.
  5. Write steps of instruction:

    • Organize steps in chronological order.
    • Limit each step to one idea.
    • Keep sentences short and simple.
    • Clarify with detailed explanation, if needed.
    • Avoid first person reference. Replace “I, me, my, mine, we, our or us” with "you or your" to address the reader.
    • Use terms to address the general public.
    • Address a certain age group or gender if it is specific to the title.
    • Use a universal tone of language to address a world-wide audience.
  6. Add additional tips or advice. Provide alternative supplies or solutions. Clarify common mistakes or misconceptions.
  7. Add precautions with possible solutions, such as "Parental supervision is advised."
  8. Research facts and techniques from a variety of sources and your own experiences. Express ideas in your own words, but always credit sources to avoid plagiarism. Citing your sources will support and substantiate the credibility of an article. Usually, explicit permission from another author must be obtained to allow their text or photographs to be included within an article.
  9. Add photographs or drawings to enhance your step-by-step procedure. Many articles need a visual reference to clarify certain concepts.
  10. Copyedit (proofread) for errors. Review spelling, punctuation, grammar and overall style.
